Throughout human history humanity has focused on separation. With all the different cultures, religions, countries, colors, races, styles, and personalities, our attention often gets caught up in the illusions of separate forms and we focus on how others are different rather than focusing on how we are similar. The more we focus on our perceived differences the more separation we create. Imagine how different our world would be if we began to see each other as more similar than different. Imagine if we looked for ways to connect to one another rather than reasons to segregate. How many wars would end? How many conflicts and grudges would be resolved? How would it change the world?

In John Lennon’s classic Imagine he is asking us to imagine living in world where humans see each other as equal and live without attaching our ego and our identity to everything we own and everything we associate with that may be considered “better” or “worse” than others. When we see each other as equal and see ourselves in others we have no need for greed, for war, or for hate.

For a moment I want you to imagine a world of peace. Imagine a world where people find ways to be inclusive in sharing their lives as opposed to exclusive and remaining stingy and selfish. Imagine if each of us focused on how we can unite each other within all of humanity as a “brotherhood of man” as opposed to dividing each other based on religion, culture, and social status.

How would your life change if everyday you woke up and shared love, peace, and joy with everyone around you regardless of their background, physical appearance, or social class? What if you saw everyone as being just like you? What if you saw yourself as one with humanity and the world? Can you imagine it?

John Lennon was called a dreamer, but he’s definitely not the only one.

In our western society we are bombarded with information telling us who we should be, what we should drive, what we should wear, what success is, and how we should live our lives. As a result, many of us work hard and slave away at a job we hate and spend everything we have just to keep up. This is part of the current insanity of humanity. We see each other as separate and honor those whom society tells us are successful and therefore see ourselves as inferior by comparison. We pretend to be something we are not and play roles according to our position, rank, and status. We live our entire lives striving to be what the outside world wants us to be and suffer when we meet or fail to meet those expectations only to discover in the end that it is all a “Grand Illusion”.

Over the years I have met many people both rich and poor who perpetually live their lives according to this illusion. The one consistency that I find among the people that I’ve met is that they never feel completely happy with their lives for a long period of time. They’re constantly looking for the next thing, the next item to tell them they’ve made it, and the next person to tell them they’re worthy. There is a constant need for more and enough is never enough. This is, once again, all part of the “Grand Illusion” that confines human beings to live in state of insanity.

Rather than looking to the outside world to tell you that you are worthy or successful, look within yourself. Trust your inner intuition and allow your heart to guide you through life. When we follow the insanity of the world we become confused and often end up depressed or feeling empty because we can’t seem to satisfy ourselves. We loose sight of who we really are and forget that there is a part of ourselves that knows how to experience joy. When you tune out the outside world and begin to live your life from the inside out, you transform your way of life and you become guided by the part of you that knows what you really desire.

As we live from the inside out the “Grand Illusion” begins to dissolve and our sense of separation fades away. In this process we discover that as human beings we are not so different after all. We discover that without the imposed views of others and without the status, clothes, and perceived differences, that deep inside we are all the same.

In my new book A Way of Life I discuss how if you are not going to follow your purpose, or if you are going to continue to do something you don’t enjoy for a living, have fun and find the love in what you do. Be creative and find ways to enjoy and express yourself. This traffic cop is a perfect example. Most police officers would agree that traffic duty can be one of the most boring and long shifts in law enforcement. However, this officer found a way to make traffic duty a fun dance and a way of expressing himself. By expressing and dancing he not only made his job fun, he also brought joy to others around him. This same principle applies to you. Life is what ever you make it out to be. You can choose to enjoy your life and find creative ways of having fun or releasing yourself in what you do and uplift the energy of everyone else around you. Or you can be miserable and make other people miserable. Each of us in this life has a purpose and most people are not going to listen to their inner intuition that is trying to reveal their purpose. In order to enjoy what you do, that joy has to come from within you. By being aware that you have the conscious choice to bring joy into your life on daily basis, you have the option of creating an extraordinary life.

Let’s face it, sometimes life happens. We make plans, we set our intentions, and we do everything we can to ensure that we get the results we want. Just as we think that everything is going to manifest the way we want, something goes wrong. For example: you spill coffee on yourself before an interview, or having unexpected technology failure when you need it to work, and traffic jams when you need to be at your destination. So what do you do when life happens? What do you do when things fall apart or don’t go according to plan?

In her song “It Happens” Sugarland gives simple and yet deeply profound advice. She says “let go laughing”. So much of our lives is focused on outcome and perfection. We have expectations and ideas of how things “should be” in the our minds. Often times we take ourselves too seriously and attach our ego to our outcome. When something goes wrong we blame, get angry, or become upset and have the “poor me” attitude over the situation rather than recognizing that the world is not going to end if you have a flat tire. We all know that in 10 years, ten months, or even 10 minutes the situation and circumstances can change. Instead of going crazy and getting upset over it, take Sugarland’s advice and let go laughing. Because let’s face it, it happens. Why not find humor and sanity within the simple craziness of everyday life.

“Be Yourself”. You hear this all the time. In fact, I can remember being in high school and listening to my teachers telling my fellow classmates and I to be “individuals” and to “be ourselves”. What does being yourself really mean? Being yourself is more than just old saying, it’s actually a deep spiritual principle. What being yourself really means is living life from the inside out. It’s listening to your inner voice guiding you through each day of your life. This is your authentic inner self or highest self providing you with all the wisdom and information you need to live your life and “be yourself”. The challenge is most people allow sources outside of themselves in the world to tell them how to live their lives. They allow the media to tell them that they can’t make money because of the economy. They allow their friends and family members to dictate if their ideas and goals are worthy of their effort. They allow the judgment of others to discourage them from reaching their potential. Because people listen to what the world wants them to do and how they can live their lives, they suffer. True happiness and true freedom in life comes from living your life from the inside out. Allow the real you to shine through in your thoughts, your actions, and your way of life and you will live your life on purpose and experience an extraordinary quality of life.

“Change We Need” was one of the slogans in the Obama campaign. In a culture that wants change and in a world that needs it, most people look for others to make the difference. They look to their politicians, they look to corporations and business, and they look to everyone else around them to change. The challenge is real change in the world begins with the person in the mirror. For those of you who are waiting for the world to change before you can experience an extraordinary quality of life, I encourage you to take a step back and look for change within yourself before you seek change in the world. As, Ghandi once said “Be the change you want to see in the world” What’s interesting is if you begin with changing yourself on the inside you will find that within a period of time your outer world will begin to change as well. Most people blame the world for the challenges they perceive in their lives and don’t realize that the change that they want to see begins with taking responsibility for themselves and their own lives. From a place of responsibility it is easier to take action each and every day towards that change. If you want the world to be more kind to others, be kind. If you want to see more love in the world, share your love. If you want to see an end to poverty, give to people who ask you for money even if it is a couple quarters. You are right. It’s time for the world to change and that change begins with you. Look in the mirror and make that change.
